Medical hygiene products that purport to treat infections should be avoided, the health department said on Thursday.
It said that if used properly, the products should be safe and that using fake products was against the law.
The Health Ministry has already directed all health departments across the country to carry out proper checks before buying any such products.
The health department also said that it was not the government’s place to decide who should have access to such products and to the extent that they were being marketed to, such products should only be purchased by people with a medical need.
Earlier, a medical council of India (MCI) had told the health ministry that it had found no evidence of any safety issue with these products and recommended that these should be banned.
