Medical workers are already required to wear masks when treating patients and must wear gloves when handling contaminated or infectious material.

But the guidelines on gloves, face coverings and medical hygiene are still relatively new and there are no official guidelines for healthcare professionals.

The US Department of Health and Human Services issued a memo last week advising healthcare workers to wear gloves and face coverals in order to protect themselves from “the spread of disease.”

It said the advice is based on the latest evidence and will be updated based on new research.

“As the US government’s position on gloves and masks has evolved, the department has adopted guidance on the proper care and use of these protective equipment to protect healthcare workers,” the memo said.

“We recommend that healthcare workers wear gloves to reduce the spread of pathogens and to protect them from direct contact with contaminated or inhaled particles.”
